Rocky Maffit presents a variety of solo, duet and group performances and workshops. These are entertaining and engaging explorations of drums and music from around the world combined with the latest percussion technology. Music, history, geography, and just plain fun are interlinked as Rocky performs on samba instruments from Brazil, Middle Eastern frame drums and modern drum innovations such as the ocean drum and the electronic Wave drum, as well as non-traditional instruments made from everyday objects. His programs celebrate our world's diversity while reflecting on the common threads of music that connect us all. For all ages. NEW FOR 2010 EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCES:The Rhythm Is You! In this performance, Rocky draws from a large collection He often begins with the djembe, a goblet-shaped drum from West Africa that can be played standing and even walking. Rocky moves among the audience, occasionally trading rhythms with individuals in call and response, then solos to show the diversity of the instrument. He also features the ocean drum, which ranges from magical quietness to thundering resonance. Singing is integral to the program. Rocky performs a call and response inspired by work songs of the 1930's called After I'm Gone. The original composition gives the audience an opportunity to respond vocally and rhythmically. Click here to listen to that song, and others, on his myspace page. Rocky also plays electronic percussion. Enjoy a demonstration of the Wave drum as he performs with his trio in a rendition of the Beatle's classic Hello, Goodbye. Audience participation extends to the stage, as Rocky invites several people to play the anklung, a collection of pitched percussion instruments from Asia, as he directs. The show concludes with rhythmic call and response that builds to applause, and everyone leaves feeling energized and inspired. How can a Rocky Maffit program contribute to your educational setting?
